The RAFI Best Paper Award for ESG-related research, sponsored by RAFI Indices, LLC, recognizes creative and impactful research that advances the investment industry’s understanding of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria utilized in sustainable, responsible, and impact investing strategies.  

Each submission will be reviewed by the Scientific Review Committee co-chaired by Professor Campbell R. Harvey and Professor Alex Edmans. 

The winner(s) of the US$10,000 prize will be notified by 31 December 2018 and will be invited to present their paper(s) at a RAFI Indices, LLC, or Research Affiliates, LLC, event. All travel expenses to present the paper will be reimbursed. 

RAFI Indices, LLC, reserves both the right to select more than one paper to receive and share the award, or to not award the prize if all submissions fail to meet our quality standards.

  • The US$10,000 prize competition is open to authors of research studies that have the potential to impact ESG-related capital allocation decisions.
  • Submissions should be working papers (i.e., not already accepted for publication) of a quality suitable for publication in a top peer-reviewed academic journal.
  • Authors are required to be employed on a full-time basis at an accredited academic institution or a nonprofit organization such as the US Federal Reserve, World Bank, or International Monetary Fund.


  • A brief statement (having no more than 300 words) that summarizes the main results of the research described in the paper and its implications for ESG investing should accompany the submission.
  • All submissions should be in English.
  • If any of the authors have a conflict of interest (i.e., are associated with an entity in the business of ESG investing or investing services), the specific nature of the conflict of interests should be detailed along with the submission.
  • Deadline: 30 September 2018
